Media keys to control YouTube & YT Music

Main Post:

I tried switching to the brave browser for a day yesterday, and one thing that i really loved is the you can use the media keys on your keyboard to control youtube videos and YT Music, Is there any way to get this on firefox? Is there an extension, or just a setting i can change to do this? thanks!

Top Comment:

Media keys are enabled by default in Firefox Nightly since a few days.

Looking for info on Screenwave Media [YT Network]

Got approached by them today and was offered a hefty signing bonus for joining them. Does anybody have any firsthand experience with them?

I've had first hand experience with them putting partners material into content id without telling them and that leading to false matches (which I received).

How to download media from internet (not with yt-dlp)

Main Post:

Yt-dlp can download from yt, dailymotion etc. But not from many sites like anime streaming or porn sites etc. I read a post where you use a certain browser with a download manager and it recognises the streaming video and gives option to download it. What was its name and how to do it?

Why does yt-dlp download weird video formats? How do I get it to be normal and download the video as an mp4?

Main Post:

Note: I'm fairly computer-illiterate. This is by far the most complicated software I've tried to use.

How can I force yt-dlp to download videos in mp4? I don't care about playback quality, it can be 360p for all I care. I just want to download an mp4 that i can open and it'll play the video and its audio.

I have read the github page with all of the Usage and Options like 4 times over now and I still have no idea why yt-dlp does some of the things it does. I've also browsed through this subreddit to see if other people were wondering how to do this, but it seemed like everyone else's questions were slightly different. I wasn't sure if the responses to those questions would work for what i want, and I didn't understand most of them anyways.

When I download a video, it seems to download various copies (why?) and sometimes it merges them (???). So far I either get a webm or a .mkv. I'm not sure why anyone would ever want to download video in these formats, but alright.

Top Comment: In brief, because MP4 sucks and those other formats suit the video's needs better. If you're watching using VLC media player (or any decent video player) it shouldn't matter anyway.

yt-dl-protocol: Instantly download any media from a bookmarklet (youtube-dl as backend)

Why do you use the old .NET Framework? The modern one with AOT is better from my POV.

I'm not clear on what yt-dlp considers "best" format

Main Post:

BTW - if this is easily answered by a FAQ or other link, by all means, be terse. I'll read.

When I dl this video without parameters it selects the 480p WEBM as the best format (244+251)

There is also a 480p MP4. So I also downloaded the MP4 by specifying "-f 135+140"

Here's a few comparisons:

  • File size: MP4 325 Mb, WEBM 190Mb.
  • Overall bitrate: MP4 880 Kbps, WEBM 516 Kbps
  • Frame rate: both 25.0

My very amateurish rule of thumb with video files is bigger is better.

Beyond that rudimentary guideline, the 880 Kbps would seem better than 516 Kbps.

When I look at the two files side by side on my computer I can't really tell them apart. I'm going to cast them both to my TV to test later.

But I'm really interested in what the "best" is, according to YT-DLP. Is this a consensus, or a matter of opinion and/or some dispute?

One last guess-tion: Is it that they are considered equal in quality, so the better one is the one that is smaller?

Here's more detailed information on each downloaded video:

Top Comment: bigger is better. 880 Kbps would seem better than 516 Kbps. not true. you can't compare different codecs directly. an older codec such as h264/avc needs higher bit rates to achieve the same result as a newer codec such as vp9. same with m4a and opus for audio. yt-dlp prefers newer codecs, rather than just picking the highest bit rate. youtube tries to target the same visual result, so an h264 1080p should look fairly similar to a vp9 1080p. depending on the video, there might be edge cases where one codec looks better. also of note, youtube only encodes h264/avc up to 1080p, anything above is vp9 and av1. yt-dlp prefers vp9 over av1, because vp9 is better supported in players and devices... for now.

Did anyone use any YT growth services or marketing to establish their channel (NOT paid followers, legit services)?

Main Post:

Does anyone use any YT growth services or marketing to get initial traction, subs, etc.? I don't mean buying likes or whatever, I mean using legit services that can help you get to the next level, either through management, guidance, advertising on their channels, etc. It's hard for me to identify which services are legit. Any suggestions?

Top Comment: I have never found a legitimate paid service outside of YouTube Advertising. You will likely find more valuable information on this sub Reddit than any of those “guru” courses.

Detox your mind from FB, Insta, Reddit, Discord, YT....

Main Post:

As someone who is born in this 21st century, I think I am qualified to comment on the behaviour patterns of who you'd label as 'youngsters'. I never used TikTok as it always felt useless.

I was hooked on to FB, Insta, Reddit, Discord, YT for a good 8-9 years until I developed more insight on life and began valuing my time more. All those aforementioned platforms are mostly waste of time with the algorithm pushing endless stream of useless but seemingly important content. Our brain (Or at least mine) confuses exposure to random unknown content as something fancy, meaningful and extraordinary. That's the psychological loophole these platforms 'milk' to keep us hooked on to these and push Ads for revenue.

Take the YT Shorts for example. I have wasted 1000s of hours in it. I watched some 25,000 videos until one day I decided to just never use the app again. And what I was watching? The intellectuals that are 'Carry Minati' and 'Bhuvan Bam'. One made name from hurling abominable abuses left and right under the pretext of 'roasting' whereas the other could never leave his cringe 'NSFW' sarcasm. Turns out that there is great demand for such cheap 3rd class content since most people never explore the depths of critical thinking. I used to enjoy all that until it hit me what kind of crap I was consuming. It used to be all compulsiveness and zero thoughtfulness. The YT comment section should legitimately be considered a landmine for what it's worth.

Same with Reddit bombarding my feed with stuff that are not at all relevant to improving the quality of my life in any way or manner. And let's not even debate on how huge a toxic echo chamber the actual participants create on all these paltfroms. Honourable mention to r/India and all the woke-wannabe Indians over there. And the ever ubiquitous cringe starting with 'AITA for doing xyz', 'TIFU by cheating'. Won't bother mentioning other subs. To me, having a Reddit account is only legitimately useful for the general queries I might have. For everything else, one can "The best free SSL provider (Insert other query here) Reddit" to get to the answer and then close the tab.

I have finally settled on few niche platforms as per my technical requirements and will remain here as long as the platform remains operational. My time is not wasted here at all. As for YouTube, I visit the site on my web browser to watch exactly what I want and quit the tab immidiately afterwards. I have managed to study significantly more ever since I made this change.I'd conclude that age really doesn't matter in these. The maturity level of humans decide how they use the internet and everything else in their lives.

Reddit is the most insidious to me. Since I mostly come here for work related topics I somewhat justify it, but then go down a rabbit hole of arguing politics with people in a houseplant sub... And half my morning is gone like <snap>
